Box Score LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team earned their first SCIAC win with a 69-61 win over Occidental on Wednesday night at Rush Gym.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Pete Boyle who netted a career-high 28 points in the win. Brendan Mora added another double-double with 14 and 10 while Joe Cookson added 19 points and eight rebounds as well.
The Sagehens shot 44% from the field and 33.3% from three but dominated the boards after they outrebounded the Tigers 41-22. Occidental forced the Sagehens into 18 turnovers and scored 15 points off those turnovers as well as outscored the Sagehens in the paint 30-22.
Pomona-Pitzer started out down in the first half 7-3 before the Sagehens got the offense going with Cookson tying the game at 11-11 with just under 14 minutes to go. The Sagehens took the lead with a Boyle three and a Charlie Treene jumper put Pomona-Pitzer up 19-15. Occidental kept it close late in the half and made a three to cut the lead down to one point with the Sagehens up 29-28 at the break.
Occidental started the half out well again on offense and took over the lead in the early stages of the second half. The Tigers held a 46-40 lead midway through the second half and kept that lead until Cookson tied the game up at 55-55 with just over five minutes to play.
With the game tied at 59-59, the Sagehens took over the game late after Cookson and Boyle closed the game out with eight of the last 10 points as the Sagehens earned their first SCIAC win of the year.
