Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – Madison Quan netted her 1,000th career point as the Sagehens fell to SCIAC rival CMS 70-64 on Wednesday night at Volekel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-5 on the year and open SCIAC play 0-1.
Quan led the Sagehens with 25 points, five assists, and five steals en route to becoming the 13th player in program history to hit 1,000 career points. Kaitlyn Leung was the only other Sagehen in double digits with 12 points and led the team with seven rebounds. Emily Church and Emily Lee each had seven points and six rebounds as well in the loss.
The Sagehens lost the percentage battle from the floor with CMS hitting 41.5% of their shots, with Pomona-Pitzer hitting 36.8% of their shots. CMS won the game from beyond the arc after hitting on 12 of their 26 shots for 46.2% and controlled the rebound battle 42-35.
A nervy start to the Sixth Street Rivalry as both teams started the game with a few turnovers before CMS started out with a 12-7 lead midway through the first. The Athenas got the lead up to 10 in the first at 17-7 before the Sagehens started to get the offense going and after nine first-quarter points from Quan, the Sagehens trailed 17-12.
Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to a one-possession game at 21-18 after a Leung layup with 6:11 left to play before halftime and the Sagehens went on to take their first lead after a Church free throw to make it 24-23. The lead shifted back over to the Athenas just before halftime as the Sagehens trailed 29-26 at the break.
Both teams had a great third quarter of offense with the Sagehens hitting on 10 of their 14 shots from the floor in the third and were 3-4 from three. Pomona-Pitzer went up 35-31 after a Leung three early in the third, but CMS quickly sparked a run to reclaim the lead at 42-37. The Sagehens came back again in the third to tie the game at 46-46, but CMS hit a three at the end of the third to go up 52-49.
CMS took a big lead in the fourth as the Sagehen offense couldn't keep up with the three-point shooting of the Athenas. CMS took a 63-55 lead with just under four minutes to play and even after the Sagehens got the game to within four points at 66-62, the Athenas were able to close the game out at the line and came away with the win over Pomona-Pitzer.
