Sagehens Fall to No. 15 Whitman on Tuesday Night

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team fell to the No. 15 Whitman Blues 68-52 on Tuesday night. The Sagehens fell behind early with just 16 points in the first two quarters but made a late comeback in the fourth quarter, pulling within five points before the Blues eventually pulled away. The Sagehens leading scorer on the night was Charlize Andaya with 10 points while Emily Church had eight points and 10 rebounds. Emily Lee also played well for Pomona-Pitzer with nine points and eight rebounds. Overall, the Sagehens shot 29.0% from the field while Whitman shot 42.4%. The Sagehens ended the night 8-25 from beyond the three-point arc (32.0%) while the Blues show just 25.0% from downtown. Whitman earned a 48-36 advantage on rebounds and 34-12 advantage for points in the paint. The Sagehens will be back in action on Friday when they play Cabrini on Friday Nov. 25 at 4:30 p.m. to start the David Wells Classic in Roberts Pavilion. 

The Whitman Blues got off to a quick start with a 12-3 run, putting the Sagehens in an early hole with 5:59 to play in the first, forcing Pomona-Pitzer to call a timeout. Out of the break, Madison Quan hit a jumper, but Whitman continued to push forward, taking a 16-6 lead by the end of the first. Emily Church made the first basket of the second quarter to cut it to 16-8 but Whitman used a 9-1 run to take a 25-9 lead with 3:21 remaining in the half. Down the stretch, the Sagehens two buckets from Emily Church and a layup from Kaitlyn Leung right before the end of the second, sending the teams into the halftime break with Whitman lead 27-16.

The Blues started the third quarter on a 13-5 run, taking a 40-21 lead over Pomona-Pitzer. With 3:56 left in the third, Emily Lee hit a three-pointer that sparked some life into Voelkel Gymnasium as Charlize Andaya hit a three of her own moments later followed by a jumper from Madison Quan. Emily Church made one of two free throws right at the end of the third as the Sagehens trailed 48-33 heading into the fourth. 

Madison Quan recorded a layup for the first basket in the fourth which was followed by a corner three from Katie Drais, cutting the lead to 48-38 to force a Whitman timeout. Kaitlyn Leung cut the lead to eight with a layup, but the Blues were able to answer with two of their own, setting the score at 52-40 with 7:42 left in the fourth. Trailing by 12, Emily Lee hit her second three of the game followed by another three-pointer from Katie Drais, cutting the Blues lead to 52-46, forcing another Whitman timeout. Out of the break, the Blues made a jumper but fouled Madison Quan on the Sagehens next possession. Quan made both free throws to keep the deficit at six points. With just under five minutes remaining, Emily Church cut the lead to 54-49 with a free throw but Whitman surged to the end of the game with a 14-3 run to earn a 68-52 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.
