Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team earned their first win of the season with an 85-70 victory over non-conference opponent Bethesda on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens move to 1-2 overall this season.
The Sagehens were led by the duo of Brendan Mora and Pete Boyle. Mora notched a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Boyle had 19 points and eight rebounds in his season debut. Ty Bergman was one rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Sagehens shot 39.7% from the field and 33.3% from three, but the Flames had a nice night beyond the arc as they hit on 13 of their 22 shots that kept them in the game. The Sagehens outrebounded the Flames 48-40 and were able to convert 18 points off of turnovers.
Bethesda started off the game with an early lead after they jumped ahead 17-9 with 12:37 left in the first half. The Sagehen offense took a little bit to get going after they scored just 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the half. The Flames took their largest lead of the game at 27-18 after a made three with 8:27 left before halftime, but the Sagehens started to get the offense going and cut the deficit down to 36-34 at halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer came out of halftime and immediately took the lead back after a pair of Ben Daugherty free-throws to take a 36-34 lead. Bethesda stayed with the Sagehens early in the second half until Pomona-Pitzer sparked big 19-3 run to take over the game with a 65-48 lead.
The Sagehens continued to build their lead late into the game and took their largest lead of the game at 80-59 after a Nathan Paik three to put an exclamation point on their first win of the season.
