Sagehens Fall Late To Boxers On Opening Night

FOREST GROVE, OR. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team opened up their season with a tough 64-63 loss at Pacific on Saturday night.

The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan who led the team with 18 points. Sharon Nejad opened her collegiate career with a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Charlize Andaya added 12 points in the loss.

Pacific had the advantage shooting from the field with 43.4% to the Sagehens' 38.5% and the Boxers hit on 43.8% of their shots from three while Pomona-Pitzer shot at just a 26.1% clip. The Sagehen defense forced 18 turnovers in the game but both teams had the same number of points off turnovers with 11 apiece.

Pacific jumped out to a small lead to open the game with an 8-2 advantage and grew that to 14-6 with just under five minutes to play in the first. Pacific went up by 10 at 16-6, but the Sagehens sparked a 10-2 to end the first quarter to trail by just two at 18-16.

Pomona-Pitzer took the lead over from Pacific at 23-22 after an Andaya layup and grew their lead after holding the Boxers to just seven points in the second quarter to take a 33-25 lead into halftime.

The Sagehens came out of halftime and took their largest lead of the night at 39-25 with 8:10 left to play in the third. The Boxers started to chip away at the lead and cut it down to just six points with over a minute to play in the third, but the Sagehens were able to stay on top by nine with a 49-40 lead heading into the fourth.                                                                                                                                           

The fourth quarter was huge for the Boxers after they outscored Pomona-Pitzer 24-14 in the final 10 minutes of play. Pacific wasted no time getting the deficit down to one possession with a 10-4 run to open the fourth to trail 53-50 with 7:11 to play. Pacific reclaimed the lead after a flurry of threes gave them a 56-55 advantage. The Sagehens jumped back on top to lead by one at 63-62 with 22 seconds to play and the ball. Pomona-Pitzer would end up turning the ball over to the Boxers who were able to take the last shot and sank a layup as time expired to hand the Sagehens a loss on opening night.
