Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Willamette 68-64 in the final game of the David Wells Classic on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-4 overall.
The Sagehens were led by Madison Quan who had a season-high 30 points in the loss. Kaitlyn Leung was the only other Sagehen in double-digits with 10 points and eight rebounds while Vanessa Hsia had nine.
The Bearcats got ahead early in the first quarter as they quickly jumped out to a 9-4 lead after a made three with 6:41 left in the first. Willamette expanded its lead to 20-13 with just under two minutes to play but the Sagehens cut down the lead with a Leung three in the closing seconds to trail 24-20 at the end of the first quarter.
The Sagehens started off well on offense to start the second quarter and took their first lead of the game after a Maison Yee layup gave Pomona-Pitzer a 28-26 lead. The Sagehens kept the lead for the majority of the second quarter, but Willamette came back late in the half and took a 38-36 lead in the final seconds to take a two-point lead into halftime.
The Sagehens and Bearcats went back and forth to open up the second half, but the Bearcats went on a 7-0 run to take a 47-41 lead with 4:33 left in the third. Pomona-Pitzer came back to cut the deficit down to two at 47-45, but the Bearcats wouldn't let the Sagehens tie the game as they held a 53-50 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
The Sagehens kept it close in the fourth quarter and eventually went on to take the lead after a Leung layup with 2:21 remaining made it 64-62. Willamette went on to score on back-to-back possessions to take back the lead at 66-64 forcing the Sagehens to come up with a big possession late in the game. The Sagehens failed to come up with a game-tying bucket and the Bearcats closed the game out at the line to hand the Sagehens their fourth loss of the season.
