Women's Basketball: Sagehens Five Game Win Streak Snapped By Chapman, 80-74

ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Chapman 80-74 on Saturday afternoon at the Hutton Sports Center.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Kamil English who came off of the bench to lead the Sagehens with 15 points. Sophomore Madison Quan tallied 14 points and seven assists, junior Renae Tamura notched 13 points, and sophomore Carly Leong and first-year Kaitlyn Leung each added 10.

Both teams shot around the 50% mark from the floor with the Panthers holding a small advantage at 49% to the Sagehens 48%.  Chapman connected on 47% of their three-point attempts while the Sagehens hit 34% of their shots from beyond the arc and the Panthers held the advantage in the turnover battle as the Sagehens committed 18 turnovers while Chapman turned the ball over just 13 times. 

Pomona-Pitzer got off to a hot start in the first quarter as they outscored the Panthers 23-11.  The Sagehens and Panthers battled early on in the first quarter with Pomona-Pitzer holding a one-point lead at 12-11 with 5:33 left to play.  The Sagehens ended the quarter on a 11-0 run as Leong tallied eight points in the first quarter alone to give the Sagehens a 23-11 lead heading into the second.

The lead was quickly erased by the Panthers as Chapman responded with a 28-point second quarter and held the Sagehens to just eight points. Chapman quickly battled back and got the game back to within one point at 27-26 at the midway point of the second quarter.  The Panthers went on to take the lead shortly after and held a 39-32 lead heading into halftime.

Chapman maintained their lead throughout the early stages of the second half as the Panthers held a 47-38 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the quarter.  The Panthers extended their lead to as large as 15 points at 59-44 with 1:48 left to play but the Sagehens got some late shots to fall and Leong ended the quarter with made jumper to cut the lead down to 59-51 heading into the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer battled back in the fourth and got the lead back down to just three points after a Tamura jump shot got the Sagehens within striking distance at 63-60 with 7:17 left to go. The Sagehens kept the deficit close in the fourth quarter but couldn't piece together enough consecutive possessions late to take back the lead from the Panthers.

Chapman was able to close the game out from the free throw line as the Sagehens' five game win streak was snapped by the Panthers.
