Baseball: Sagehens Complete Comeback Over Puget Sound, 9-8

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team came back from a seven-run deficit and defeated non-conference opponent Puget Sound 9-8 on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 12-3 overall.

The Sagehens were led by junior Jeremy Jess and first-year Lincoln Pantell who each went 3-5 in the win.

Pomona-Pitzer had trouble early on against the Loggers as Puget Sound plated five runs in their first at-bats. The Loggers followed their five-run first with two more in the second inning to jump out to an early 7-0 advantage.

The Sagehens' bats were quiet in the first two innings but came alive later on as they went on to score in five consecutive innings.

The Sagehens got their first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third as junior Jeremiah Quezada grounded out to bring in first-year Kevin Lo, but Puget Sound made up that run in the top of the fourth to keep the lead at seven runs at 8-1.

Pomona-Pitzer responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Andrew Phillips singled to bring in Jacob Patterson-Kohout and first-year Jack Damelio and junior Nolan McCafferty hit sacrifice flies to trim the lead to 8-4.

The Sagehens added one run in the fifth and sixth innings with Phillips reaching on an error that scored a home and Jess connected for his fifth home run of the season to bring the Sagehens within two runs at 8-6.

Pomona-Pitzer would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh after they plated three runs in the inning. Damelio singled home Pantell followed by back-to-back sacrifice flies by Lo and McCafferty to take a 9-8 lead.

The Sagehen bullpen put out strong outings in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings from sophomore Brett Super, junior Trevor Walker and junior Lukka Green to hang on for the win as Green notched his second save on the year.
