Baseball: Sagehens Open 2019 With 14-4 Win Over Puget Sound

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball started off 2019 with a big 14-4 win over non-conference opponent Puget Sound on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens start with a 1-0 overall record.

The Sagehens were led by junior Jeremy Jess who started out his 2019 strong with a 3-4 performance with four RBI, three runs and a home run in the win. Juniors Nolan McCafferty and Jeremiah Quezada also tallied multi-hit games as McCafferty ended 2-4 with a walk and Quezada went 2-5 with four RBI.

Junior Tyler Yoshihara got the start for the Sagehens with four innings pitched, three strikeouts and two earned runs. Junior Ethan Baer relived Yoshihara out of the pen and picked up the win with four strong innings of relief work and junior Luka Green ended the night for the Sagehens on the mound in the 9th.

Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time getting the offense going as they struck for four runs in the bottom of the first. Jess doubled home a run followed by a two RBI double by Quezada and capped off with a RBI single by junior Jack Hanley to take an early 4-0 lead.

McCafferty added to the early total with a RBI double to center field to bring home Kevin Lo to extend the lead to 5-0 before Puget Sound got on the board with a run in the third and one in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2.

Jess and Quezada came back with RBI's in the bottom of the fourth and sophomore Seth Stone joined in on the rally with a two RBI double to right field to put the Sagehens up 9-2 after four innings of play.

The Loggers added another run in the fifth to bring the score to 9-3, but Jess erased any chance of a comeback with a monster two-run homer to left center to put the Sagehens up 11-3.

Junior Brian Knapp, Quezada and Hanley all brought in runs in the seventh as the Sagehens held on and coasted to win on 2019 opening day.
