Men's Tennis: Sagehens Split Road Trip To Improve To 3-1 Record

EAGLE ROCK, CA. – The No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis Team split their road doubleheader on Saturday, losing to Division II Azusa Pacific University 8-1 and defeating SCIAC opponent Occidental College 7-2.

Pomona-Pitzer 1, Azusa Pacific 8

The Sagehens stumbled into a hard-fought loss against their Division II opponent, battling closely in majority of the matches. The Cougars took the first point after winning doubles no. 1 over Octave Bellet de Giacomoni and Joshua Gearou. Charlie Stark and Avery Bicks battled to a tiebreaker in no. 3 doubles, but got edged out 7-6 (7-5). Jed Kronenberg and Jansen Comadena also went to tiebreakers in no. 2 doubles, but fell 7-6 (7-4).

Over in singles, Octave Bellet brought the Sagehens within one after defeating his opponent, Ronald Kang, in no. 3 singles 6-4 and 6-0. Unfortunately, the Cougars won the remainder of the singles matches. Kronenberg dropped no. 1 singles 7-5 and 6-0 to Jakob Schnaitter and Joshua Gearou lost to Ryan Nuno in no. 2 singles 6-4 and 6-2. Leyton Bohren defeated Sam Gearou in no. 4 singles 6-0 and 7-6 (7-5) while Avery Bicks fell in no. 6 singles 7-5 and 6-4. Comadena came close to defeating his opponent in no. 5 singles, going to three sets. However, his opponent Jesse Haas prevailed in the third set tiebreaker, winning 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, and 1-0 (8).

Pomona-Pitzer 7, Occidental 2

The Sagehens bounced back with a big SCIAC victory over Occidental College later in the evening. In doubles, Quinn Hirsohn and Sam Gearou took the first point with a no. 2 doubles victory 8-2. Bellet and Joshua followed with an 8-6 win in no. 1 singles, but Stark and Nils Skattum dropped no. 3 doubles in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-6).

Over in the singles battles, Jacob Schoenherr easily won his match in no. 5 singles with a pair of 6-0 sweeps. Sam Gearou followed with a pair of 6-3 wins in no. 2 singles, and Bellet sealed the match with a 7-5 and 6-2 win over David Zhang in no. 1. Jack Weiler won no. 6 singles 6-3 and 6-4 while Hirsohn took no. 4 singles over Joe Schwarcz 6-1 and 6-3.
