Women's Basketball: English Leads Sagehens Past Tigers With Career-High 31 Points

LOS ANGELES, CA. – Sophomore Kamil English netted a new career-high with 31 points as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team opened up their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)  with an 87-58 win over Occidental on Saturday night.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by English who notched 31 points, five rebounds and five steals. First-year Emily Church came off of the bench with a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, sophomore Amara Chidom had 13 points and nine rebounds and sophomore Cameron Edward tallied 11 points in the win.

The Tigers started out with the lead early on with Occidental jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Tigers held the lead for the majority of the first quarter as they limited the Sagehens to under 20 points in the first quarter, the only quarter in which the Sagehens scored under 20 points tonight. Pomona-Pitzer got back on top on the last play of the first as English nailed a jumper with four seconds left to take a 16-14 lead heading into the second quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer began to pull away after starting the second quarter with a run to take a 31-22 lead midway through the second after a Church jump shot. The Sagehens outscored the Tigers 22-16 in the second quarter and held a 38-30 lead heading into halftime.

The Sagehens continued to stretch their lead in the third as they had their highest scoring quarter of the night with 26 points and limited the Tigers to their worst quarter of the night as they only surrendered 14.  English took over in the third as she scored 13 points and did not miss a shot going 4-4 from the field 2-2 from three and 3-3 from the free-throw line.  The Sagehens sparked an 11-0 run in the third and stretched the lead to 55-37 and ended the third with a 64-44 lead.

Although the Sagehens started the fourth with a 20-point lead, Pomona-Pitzer did not take its foot off the gas as they outscored Occidental 23-14 in the final quarter of play. English continued her dominant play as she also stayed perfect in the fourth with 11 points and hitting all four of her shots from the floor as the Sagehens cruised past the Tigers in their opening SCIAC contest.
