Women's Basketball: Sagehens Hold Off Gorloks For 66-65 Win at Home

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team ended 2019 with a close 66-65 win over non-conference opponent Webster University on Monday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens have now won five-straight games and improve to 6-4 overall on the year.

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Carly Leong who came off of the bench for 14 points in the win. Sophomore Cameron Edward chipped in with 12 points going 4-8 from three and sophomore Amara Chidom had 12 points and six rebounds.

The Sagehens and Gorloks both shot in the 40's from the field with the Sagehens holding a slight advantage with 45% from the floor to Webster's 41%.  The Gorloks connected on 71% of their threes while the Sagehens shot 25% from beyond the arc.  Webster outscored the Sagehens in the paint 32-26 but the Sagehen bench played a key role with 29 points in the win.

The two teams alternated leads early on in the game in a closely contested first quarter of action.  The Sagehens had turnover issues early in the game and ended the first quarter with seven turnovers that aided the Gorloks in taking an 18-16 lead after the first.

Pomona-Pitzer's offense got going in the second quarter and took back the lead from Webster.  The Sagehens took a 24-19 lead after a Leong and-one with 5:37 left before halftime.  The Sagehens pushed the lead to 29-23, their largest lead of the first half, but Webster made some late baskets and tied the Sagehens at 33-33 heading into halftime.

The Sagehens came out of halftime and put together their best scoring quarter of the game as they outscored Webster 22-19.  The Gorloks and Sagehens kept it close midway through the third but big quarters from Edward and Leong with six points each helped the Sagehens take a 55-52 lead heading into the fourth.

The game came down to the wire after the Sagehens took a 66-60 lead with 1:59 left to play after an Edward three.  The Gorloks responded with a three of their own on the following possession and after a Sagehen turnover, converted two free-throws to cut the lead down to just one point at 66-65. The Sagehens turned the ball over again on offense and after a full timeout by Webster, the Sagehens came up big on defense as Chidom deflected a pass in the paint and the Sagehens survived a close call at home.

Up Next: The Sagehens jump back into SCIAC play as they next travel to Chapman on Saturday, January 4th at 4:00 p.m.
