Sagehens Split Opening Day of Stag-Hen Invite

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis Team split the first day of the Stag-Hen Invitational, falling to No. 7 Washington University St. Louis 6-3 before defeating No. 25 Case Western Reserve 6-3. Freshman Jed Kronenberg went a combined 3-1 in his singles and doubles matches while Sam Malech was a perfect 2-0 in singles.

Season Impact: The Sagehens currently boast an 8-3 record overall this season.

No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis def. No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer 6-3

The Sagehens did not have an ideal start in their opening match against the Bears, dropping all three doubles matches. Octave Bellet and Avery Bicks played in no. 1 doubles for the first time this season, but fell to Konrad Kozlowski and Daniel Li 8-4. Jed Kronenberg and Kalyan Chadalavada dropped their no. 2 doubles round 8-4 and Marko Mandic and Quinn Hirsohn fell in no. 3 doubles 8-4.

Kronenberg bounced back with a convincing 6-2 and 6-0 victory over Johnny Wu in no. 1 singles. Sam Malech also earned a victory in no. 5 singles over Daniel Li (6-3, 6-4). Avery Bicks came through with win in no. 3 at 6-2 and 7-5, while Marko Mandic dropped a heart-breaker, going three sets with Bernardo Neves before taking the loss (5-7, 6-3, 5-7). Josh Gearou lost to Ben van der Sman 6-1 and 6-0 in no. 2 and Jacob Schoenherr fell in a pair of 6-4 sets to Koki Takabatake.

Pomona-Pitzer def. No. 25 Case Western Reserve 6-3

Pomona-Pitzer bounced back in the second round of the Stag-Hen Invitational, beating the Spartans 6-3. The Sagehens opened up with the advantage, taking two of the three doubles matches. Bicks and Bellet triumphed in the no. 1 doubles over Matthew Chen and James Fojtasek 8-2 while Chadalavada and Kronenberg took down Kanam and Concannon 8-2 in no. 2 doubles.

Kronenberg continued where he left off in singles, trouncing his opponent, James Fojtasek, 6-0 and 6-4 in no. 1. Sam Malech locked up his no. 5 singles match handily, defeating Rob Stroup 6-2 and 6-1. Octave Bellet clinched the match in no. 3 singles, edging out Anthony Kanam in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-2). Jacob Schoenherr also won his match in three sets, taking down Siddharth Rajupet (3-6, 7-5, 10-7).

Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Trinity University (Texas) tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the second day of the Stag-Hen Invitational.
