Men's Tennis: No. 11 Sagehens Defeat Caltech, 8-1

CLAREMONT, CA — The No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team had a busy Saturday, starting the day off with a match against the Azusa Pacific Cougars on the road, then finishing the day with home match against SCIAC opponent Caltech.

No. 11 Azusa Pacific 5, No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer 4

The Sagehens fought hard against NCAA Division II No. 11 Azusa Pacific, but fell to the Cougars 5-4. 

In doubles play, Graham Maassen and Quinn Hirsohn came away with a 8-6 win over Pascal Engel and Christian Schmid in the No. 2 match. Azusa Pacific held on for wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to head into singles with a 2-1 advantage. 

Avery Bicks responded in the No. 3 singles match, with a commanding 6-4, 6-1 win over Marnix Pluim to even the overall score at 2-2. Azusa Pacific retook the lead after a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 5 match.

Marko Mandic answered with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 4 match against Shepherd Newcomb to pull the score even again at 3-3. 

But Azusa Pacific won the No. 6 match 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 and the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the victory. 

Josh Kim finished strong, giving the Sagehens a 7-6, 6-3 win in the No. 2 match.

No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer 8, Caltech 1

The Sagehens responded from the morning's defeat with a resounding win over the Caltech Beavers at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

Pomona-Pitzer took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Parth Desai and Michael Poeschla led things off with a 8-3 win in the No. 3 slot, and Marko Mandic and Avery Bicks followed it up with a 8-6 win at No. 2. 

The Sagehens dominated the singles portion of the match taking all six matches. Sam Gearou started the winning off with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 6 match to give Pomona-Pitzer the 3-1 overall lead. 

Bicks added on to his doubles win with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 4 match. Antony Bello clinched the win for the Sagehens besting his opponent in the No. 2 match 6-4, 7-5.

Mandic added another win at No. 3 taking his match 7-6 (3), 6-0. After dropping the first set 3-6 in the No. 5 match, Quinn Hirsohn responded by winning the next two sets 6-3, 10-6. Graham Maassen capped off the singles sweep with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win in the No. 1 match.

Season Impact: The Sagehens move to 16-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Next Match: The Sagehens continue SCIAC play on Friday, April 14 when they travel to Whittier to play the Poets in a 3 p.m. match.
