Men's Tennis: No. 9 Sagehens Surge in Singles to Beat No. 21 Mary Washington

CLAREMONT, CA — The No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team responded from a 2-1 deficit to beat No. 21 Mary Washington 6-3 Thursday night at the Pauley Tennis Complex. 

Season Impact: Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-3 overall. Mary Washington drops to 6-3 overall.

From the Coach: I was really proud how we fought back after falling behind early," said Head Coach Steve Bickham. "Josh Gearou did a great job and held onto his undefeated record, and I was very happy to get Sam Malech back in the lineup."

Doubles

Spencer Simonides and Antony Bello scored a big win for the Sagehens in the No. 1 doubles match. The pair beat a tough duo of Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming 8-5 to keep the total score even at 1-1.

In the No. 2 match, Graham Maassen and Jake Yasgoor played the closest doubles match of the night. The two rallied to a 7-7 tie but dropped the final two games, falling 9-7. 

Kalyan Chadalavada and Avery Bicks represented the Sagehens in the No. 3 doubles match, but fell to Derek Hagino and Patrick Hughes 8-2.

Singles

After ending the doubles portion of the competition down a match, Pomona-Pitzer rallied to win five of six singles matches. 

Yasgoor led the Sagehens in the No. 1 spot and responded after his close loss in doubles with a resounding 6-3, 6-2 win to even the overall score to 2-2.

In the No. 6 match, Malech made a strong return to Pomona-Pitzer's lineup giving the Sagehens the lead after winning 7-6 (tiebreaker), 6-1. In the No. 2 match, Maassen scored revenge against the Eagles winning 6-3, 7-5.

Marko Mandic kept the Sagehens rolling with a 6-3, 7-6 (tiebreaker) win at No. 4. Josh Kim had the tightest singles match of the night playing three sets, but fell 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 in the No. 3 match.

At No. 5, Josh Gearou kept his record this season blemish free, winning in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Next Match: The Sagehens next host Irvine Valley College on Friday, March 10 at 10 a.m. They will face Swarthmore later that day a 2 p.m.
