Men's Tennis: No. 11 Sagehens Win Big Against Westmont, Chapman

CLAREMONT, CA — The No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team had a busy Friday afternoon, beating the Westmont Warriors 8-1 at the Pauley Tennis Complex, then taking to the road to beat the Chapman Panthers 8-1. 

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to 15-7 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.

No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer 8, Westmont 1

Doubles

The Sagehens opened their day with a morning match against the visiting NAIA No. 12 Warriors. Pomona-Pitzer got ahead early, surging to a 2-0 advantage after winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.

Antony Bello and Spencer Simonides made quick work of their opponents winning 8-2 at No. 1. In the No. 2 slot, Graham Maassen and Jake Yasgoor extended the lead with their 8-3 win. Quinn Hirsohn and Marko Mandic fell in a tight match at No. 3, 9-7.

Singles

Pomona-Pitzer rolled in the singles portion of the match winning all six matches. Hirsohn opened up the winning in singles, taking his match against Jordan Strandness 6-2, 6-2. Mandic kept the momentum going with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3. 

In the No. 4 match, Josh Gearou won his first set 7-5 and was winning the second 4-0 when his opponent retired from the match. Junior Sam Malech bested Tommy Nightingale 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.

In the tightest match of the day, No. 1 ranked West Region singles player Jake Yasgoor scored a comeback win in the No. 1 slot. After dropping the first set 6-3, Yasgoor responded winning 6-3 in the second set and 10-8 in the third. No. 18 ranked West Region singles player Graham Maassen closed out the match for the Sagehens winning 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the No. 2 match.

It more of the same when the Sagehens took on the Chapman Panthers in SCIAC play.

Doubles

Pomona-Pitzer took a 3-0 advantage after doubles play and never looked back. Spencer Simonides and Antony Bello rolled in the No. 1 doubles match winning 8-2.

Parth Desai and Michael Poeschla took down Len Kamemoto and Jacob Neal in the No. 3 spot 8-6. Sam Gearou and Avery Bicks made it a clean sweep in doubles, winning at No. 2, 8-5. 

Singles

Bello kept rolling in his singles match, winning in the No. 1 slot 6-0, 6-2. Simiondes followed suit at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-1, clinching the match for the Sagehens.

Sam Gearou earned a singles win with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 performance at No. 4. Sophomore Desai dominated at No. 6, beating his opponent 6-1, 6-2, to put the Sagehens ahead 7-0. 

Bicks made it 8-0 when he beat Eli Wiener 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 match. Len Kamemoto scored the Panthers' lone win of the day, beating Jonathon Miller in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.

Next Match: The Sagehens have another doubleheader next Saturday, April 8, beginning the day on the road against Division II, No. 11 Azusa Pacific University at 10 a.m. Pomona-Pitzer then returns home to face the Caltech Beavers at 3 p.m.
