CLAREMONT, CA — The No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team fought wire to wire, scoring a close 5-4 win over No. 14 Tufts.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to 12-7 overall this season. The Jumbos drop to 4-2.

The Sagehens opened up with a commanding 8-2 win in the No. 1 doubles match with Spencer Simonides and Antony Bello beating Rohan Bupte and Griffin Brockman. 

Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead to 2-0 after a 8-6 win by Quinn Hirsohn and Marko Mandic in the No. 3 doubles match. The Jumbos fought back at No. 3 winning a close match 9-7.

With the Sagehens heading into singles play with a 2-1 lead, Tufts evened the match at 2-2 with Zain Ali beating Graham Maassen 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match. 

But Pomona-Pitzer took the lead for good with Sam Malech winning at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3. Jake Yasgoor kept the Sagehens rolling in the No. 1 slot. The senior won a close first set 7-5, and then dominated the second set 6-2, to extend Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 4-2. 

The Jumbos scored a win at No. 4 with Zach Shaff beating Bello in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. But Josh Kim sealed the victory for Pomona-Pitzer winning in three sets against Danny Coran. The senior came through with a win in the first set 6-4, and after dropping the second set 3-6, bounced back in the third with a 6-4 win.

Tufts' Kevin Kelly scored a win for the jumbos at No. 5 beating Mandic 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to put the final match score at 5-4.
