Men's Tennis: Sagehens Split At Day One Of Stag-Hen Invitational

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team split in day one of the Stag-Hen Invitational as they defeated Case Western Reserve 5-4 and fell to Bowdoin 6-3.

The Sagehens took the first game of the Stag-Hen Invitational as they defeated the Case Western Reserve Spartans 5-4.

Pomona-Pitzer began the day as they jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles competition.

The Sagehens got their first win of the day in the No. 2 doubles spot as senior Graham Maassen and senior Jake Yasgoor defeated the team of Fojtasek and Gruber 8-3.

The Spartans then came back to even the score as they took their only doubles match in the No. 3 spot as the team of sophomores Sam Gearou and Josh Gearou fell 8-4.

The Sagehens went ahead in the final match of doubles play as the No. 1 team of senior Spencer Simonides and senior Antony Bello defeated the Spartans team of Benedetto and Dawn 8-6 to give Pomona-Pitzer a 2-1 lead heading into singles.

The singles led off in Pomona-Pitzer's favor as they quickly took a win at No. 1 singles as Yasgoor defeated Fojtasek by the scores of 6-0, 6-1.

The Sagehens then earned a win in the No. 5 singles match as Josh Gearou went on to defeat Collins 6-1, 6-2 but Case Western came back to win their first singles match of the day in the No. 3 spot as Strop defeated Bello, 6-2, 6-2.

Pomona-Pitzer went on to clinch the match as senior Josh Kim found a win in the No. 4 singles as he defeated his opponent 6-2, 7-5 to seal the win for the Sagehens.

The Spartans went on to win the finals two matches of the day as Sam Gearou fell in the No. 6 spot 6-1, 7-5 and Maassen fell at No. 2 in a third set, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

After winning against the Spartans, the Sagehens then took on Bowdoin in the second match of the Stag-Hen.

Bowdoin jumped ahead 2-1 after doubles as the Sagehens got their only doubles win at the No. 2 spot with the team of Maassen and Yasgoor winning in a breaker 9-8 (3). Pomona-Pitzer fell in the No. 1 doubles as Bello and Simonides lost their match 8-5 and Kalyan Chadalavada and Avery Bicks fell at the No. 3 spot 8-3.

The Sagehens went on to take two singles matches as well as Kim earned a win in the No. 3 spot as he won the second set in a tie breaker 7-5, 7-6 (10-8). Yasgoor also went on to win his singles match as he went into a third set against his opponent and came out with a 6-7 (6), 6-0, 10-2 victory.

The Polar Bears went on to take wins in the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches as they earned the win over the Sagehens.

Maassen fell to Urken 6-1, 6-2, Marko Mandic lost his match at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3, Josh Gearou fell at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0 and Sam Malech lost his match in the No. 6 spot by the scores of 7-6 (4), 1-6, 10-8.
