Baseball: Sagehens Split Double Header With Puget Sound

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team split their double header with non-conference opponent Puget Sound as they won game one 7-4 and lost game two 9-6 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Freshman Jeremy Jess got the ball for the Sagehens in game one as he notched his first collegiate win of his career. The freshman went five complete innings gave up eight hits, two runs and struck out two hitters. Senior Peyton Holm came on in relief as well as freshman Tyler Yoshihara to close out the game and record his first save of the year.  

The Sagehens were led by junior Cade Hulse who went 4-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Freshman Ezra Steinberg, senior Tanner Nishioka, junior Bryce Rogan and junior Matt Omori each chipped in with two hits apiece.

The Loggers were led by leadoff man Cal Muramaru who went 3-5 with two runs scored in the loss.

Puget Sound struck first in the top of the first inning as they strung together three hits to open up the game and took an earl 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens responded in the bottom half of the inning as Hulse hit an RBI single and Rogan tip toed around the tag and dove over the catcher at home plate to even up the score at 1-1 heading into the second.

Pomona-Pitzer broke the game open in the bottom of the third as they plated six runners in the inning after RBI's from Rogan, Hulse, Omori, Simsiman and Steinberg gave the Sagehens a commanding 7-1 lead.

The Loggers went on to score one run in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings but the Sagehens were able to hold of the Puget Sound offense as they took game one of the double header.

Game Two:

Freshman Luka Green toed the rubber for the Sagehens to begin game two as he went three innings with four hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts in his freshman debut from the mound.

The Sagehens were led by Hulse who went 4-5 with an RBI in game two. Hulse finished the day 8-10, three RBI and a run scored. Freshman Jack Hanley, junior Adam Hinthorne and Steinberg each had two hits in game two.

The Loggers were led by Nolan Wiler who went 3-4 with two runs scored in the win.

Pomona-Pitzer had the lead early on as Duncan Skerrett singled home Omori in the bottom of the second to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.

Puget Sound had its big inning in the top of the third as they scored six runs in the inning coming off of four hits by the Loggers but the Sagehen defense committed two errors that helped Puget Sound keep the inning alive and taker a 6-1 lead.

The Loggers added one more in their next at bats as they scored on a wild pitch to extend their lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth.

The Sagehens began to chip away at the lead as they responded with RBI's from Jack Hanley, Nishioka and Hulse to cut the lead to 7-5 after four innings of play.

Puget Sound added two more to their total ion the top of the sixth as Ryan Darrow hit a solo shot and Chris Dunn followed up with an RBI single to give the Loggers a 9-5 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer added one more in the bottom of the sixth off of an RBI single by Jeremy Jess but the Sagehens couldn't come back in game two as they split the double header but won the series two games to one.

Up Next: The Sagehens will be back in action again on Sunday, February 5th at 11:00 a.m. as they host non-conference opponent Willamette.
