Men's Basketball: Micah Elan Hits Game Winner As Sagehens Defeat Kingsmen 77-75

CLAREMONT, CA – Freshman Micah Elan scored the game-winning layup as time expired as the Sagehens defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 77-75 on Thursday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improved its winning streak to four-straight games and move to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran now drops to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC.

The Sagehens had four players reach double digits led by sophomore Corbin Koch who had a team-high 13 points and five assists. Sophomore Daniel Rosenbaum had 11 points and freshman James Kelbert and junior Glenn Leininger each had 10.

The Kingsmen were led by Wolfgang Wood who had a game-high 23 points. Austin Cole chipped in with 16 and Adrian Francis and Caleb Richey each contributed 13.

Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran traded baskets for the majority of the first half as the lead changed hands a total of eight times in the half.

The Sagehens put together a late run at the end of the first half as Kelbert caused back to back steals to give Pomona-Pitzer a 43-34 lead heading into the half.

The Kingsmen came out in the second half and began to chip away at the Sagehens' lead and found themselves only down three at 56-53 with 11:48 remaining.

After holding a slight lead, the Sagehens extended their lead back up to double digits at 65-55 as Jack Gale hit a big three-point jumper with 7:30 left in the second half.

Cal Lutheran got hot from beyond the arc late in the game and closed the gap to tie the game at 75-75 with just 22 seconds remaining.

Pomona-Pitzer chose not to take a timeout and played the ball down the court as Elan drove past his man and laid in the game-winning layup with just seconds remaining on the clock.
