CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The No. 2 seed Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team fell in the SCIAC Tournament Final to No. 1 seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The Sagehens end the year in second place in the SCIAC after the loss to CMS in the Championship match.
Pomona-Pitzer had the upper hand early on in the match as they took two of the three doubles matches to start the day. Senior Jonathan Kim and junior Graham Maassen won the first match of the day in the No. 1 doubles as they defeated Skyler Butts and Daniel Morkovine 8-5.
Junior Antony Bello and junior Spencer Simonides won their match in the No. 2 doubles match by the score of 8-2.
The brothers team of freshman Sam Gearou and freshman Josh Gearou were down early but battled back tie the match at 8-8. CMS took the lead and won in a tie-breaker 9-8.
After the 2-1 lead, the Sagehens struggled during the singles competition against the Athenas. CMS went on to win five of the six singles.
The only singles win of the night for Pomona-Pitzer came in the No. 6 singles match as sophomore Marko Mandic defeated his opponent in three sets by the score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
The Sagehens will wait to see if they qualify as an at-large team for the NCAA Regionals.
