Men's Tennis: No. 2 Sagehens Advance To SCIAC Championship With 5-3 Win Over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team advanced to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship with a 5-3 win over Redlands on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Sagehens started out the match against Redlands with a 2-1 deficit as they only claimed one of the three doubles matches. The only win in the doubles matches came from the team of senior Jonathan Kim and junior Jake Yasgoor as they defeated their opponents in the No. 2 doubles 8-5.

Despite being down in the match, the Sagehens rallied back in the singles matches and won four of the six singles matches to take the win.

The Sagehens got a win in the No. 2 singles match as Kim dropped the first set 6-1 but fought back to win set two 6-3 and won the third set 6-4.

Junior Antony Bello won in straight sets in the No. 6 singles match as he defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-3.

Pomona-Pitzer found another win in the No. 3 singles match as Junior Josh Kim took a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory.

The Sagehens got their final win of the night as sophomore Sam Malech dropped his first set 7-6 but came back to win set two 7-5 and finished off his opponent in the third set by the score of 6-2.

The No. 2 seed Sagehens will face off against top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the SCIAC Championship match.
