CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 10 ranked Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team started out the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships with a 9-0 win over Cal Lutheran on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Trying to beat the rain, the Sagehens and Cal Lutheran started out with the singles competition first and Pomona-Pitzer went on to win all six of the individual matches.
Pomona-Pitzer started out the match as sophomore Sam Malech beat his opponent by the score of 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles match.
Junior Antony Bello followed that up with a win in the No. 6 singles match 6-3, 6-1 and senior Josh Kim defeated his opponent in the No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Jonathan Kim took a win in the No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win and junior Graham Maassen won his match in the No. 1 singles by the score of 6-3, 7-5.
The Sagehens ended the singles matches as freshman Josh Gearou went on to win his match in the No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory to sweep the singles matches for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens also went on to stay perfect in the doubles matches as the team of Jonathan Kim and sophomore Marko Mandic won the No. 3 doubles by the score of 8-1.
Maassen and junior Spencer Simonides won their match in the No. 1 doubles match as they took care of their opponents 8-2.
The Sagehens completed the sweep as the brothers team of Josh and Sam Gearou won their match in the No. 2 doubles with a 8-7 (5) tie-breaker win.
The Sagehens will continue the SCIAC Championships tomorrow at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as they take on No. 3 Redlands at 2:00 p.m.
