Baseball: Pomona-Pitzer Falls To Pacific 19-11

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team fell in game one of a three game series to Pacific University by the score of 19-11 on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Sagehens started out on top as senior Kevin Brice drove in senior Simon Rosenbaum with an RBI single to left field to give Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead.

Pacific responded with three in the top of the second with RBI's from Kane Ulrich and Ben Roquet to give the Boxers a 3-1 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer came back to tie the game as sophomore Bryce Rogan hit an infield single to bring home junior Tanner Nishioka and junior Kevin Jordan brought home Rosenbaum on a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-3 heading into the fourth inning.

The Boxers reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth as Dylan Wright hit a three-run homer to dead center to give Pacific a 6-3 lead.

Pacific tacked on two more in the top of the fifth as Roquet drove home two Boxers on an RBI single to extend the lead to 8-3.

The Sagehens began to chip away at the lead as Brice hit an RBI double to right center and Jordan brought home Brice on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to 8-6 at the end of five innings of play.

Pacific answered in the top of the sixth as they connected on an RBI single and an RBI double to take a 10-6 lead over Pomona-Pitzer. 

The Boxers blew the game open in the top of the seventh as they plated nine runs in the inning capped off by a grand slam by Kurtis Kloke to take a 19-6 lead.

The Sagehens scored one in the seventh on a sophomore Adam Hinthorne RBI single and one in the eighth as sophomore Rob Simsiman hit a sacrifice fly to score another run but trailed the Boxers 19-8 heading into the ninth.

Pomona-Pitzer got three more runs in the ninth but the Sagehens were unable to match the Boxers' offense as they fell in the first game of the three game series.

The Sagehens and Boxers play tomorrow for game two of the series at 1:00 p.m.
