Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team snapped their three game losing skid with a 79-70 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Occidental on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by senior Gibson Farone-Collins who tallied 25 points and nine rebounds in the win for the Sagehens. Freshman Daniel Rosenbaum was also in double figures with 24 points and five rebounds.
Occidental was led by Jay Miller who tallied a game-high 27 points and Andrew Johnson collected 24 points in loss for the Tigers.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 12-6 lead after a Rosenbaum three-point jumper with 13:00 minutes left in the first half.
The Tigers came back to take the lead with 4:37 left in the first half at 21-20 after an Andrew Johnson layup and went into the locker room with a 25-24 lead at halftime.
The second half was a tightly contested battle with neither team able to pull away from one another.
The Sagehens took a 55-50 lead with 5:11 left in the second half after sophomore Chris Wright hit a jump shot to give the Sagehens the lead down the stretch.
The final minutes of the game was crucial as the Tigers had the ball with 24 seconds remaining with the score tied at 60-60. Johnson buried a jump shot for the Tigers to take the lead 62-60 over the Sagehens with 17 seconds remaining.
Pomona-Pitzer responded with junior Mitchell Finkell tipping in a missed shot and sending the game to overtime.
Pomona-Pitzer rode the momentum into overtime and took over game outscoring Occidental 17-8 in the overtime period.
The Sagehens stayed solid at the line and closed out the game to take their second SCIAC win of the season.
The Sagehens next take the court on Monday, January 25th for the first game of the sixth street showdown against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Voelkel Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
