Claremont, Calif. - The No. 6 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team fell behind 3-0 after doubles and dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the regional finals of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The loss ends Pomona-Pitzer's season as a team with a 26-7 record, with four of the losses coming to CMS (Stag-Hen finals, regular season SCIAC match, SCIAC Tournament finals, NCAA Regional finals). The Stags improve to 29-2 (unbeaten against Division III teams) and move on to the NCAA Nationals in Mason, Ohio from May 18-20.
The last two times the teams played, the Sagehens came away with a 2-1 lead after doubles, before falling (6-3 in the regular season, 7-2 in the SCIAC finals). This time, though, CMS took control of the match by sweeping all three doubles lines, coming from behind at No. 3 for an 8-5 win after sophomores Antony Bello and Spencer Simonides were up a break.
Junior Jonathan Kim (pictured) gave a strong effort at No. 2 singles, where he led 6-3, 4-3 over Skylar Butts when the match was halted once CMS had the team clinch. Glenn Hull (6-1, 6-1 at No. 6) and Nik Marino (6-1, 6-2 at No. 3) earned the singles wins that gave the Stags the team victory 5-0.
Senior Connor Hudson had another good battle with Warren Wood of CMS at No. 1 singles, where Hudson was up a break for most of the first set before Wood broke to tie 5-5 and went on to a 7-5 win. Wood, who had won two of the three meetings with Hudson during the regular season, was up 7-5, 3-1 when the match finished. Freshman Sam Malech overcame a slow start and was in a good battle with Daniel Morkovine at No. 5 singles, where Morkovine led 6-4, 2-2.
Hudson will move on to compete in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships in Mason, Ohio from May 20-22 after the conclusion of the team championships. Hudson and freshman Kalyan Chadalavada will represent Pomona-Pitzer in doubles, after the duo reached the finals of the ITA Nationals in the fall.
