Pasadena, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team led 2-1 after doubles, but top-seeded and No. 1 ranked CMS was able to respond by sweeping singles without dropping a set to earn the 2015 SCIAC Championship with a 7-2 win over the Sagehens on Saturday afternoon at Pasadena City College.
The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer, which is ranked No. 6 nationally, to 25-6 on the season, with three of the losses coming to CMS. The Sagehens should be in excellent shape for a bid to the NCAA Tournament, where it could play another match against CMS, which improves to 27-2 on the year (undefeated against Division III opponents) and wins its 95th SCIAC match in a row.
Junior Jonathan Kim (pictured) and sophomore Graham Maassen earned an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, and sophomores Antony Bello and Spencer Simonides took a 9-8 win at No. 3 by controlling the tiebreaker 7-2, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
However, CMS took control by sweeping the first sets on all six courts, although not without a fight. Senior Connor Hudson went to a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles in the first set, but fell 7-5 to Warren Wood, and ended up falling 7-5, 6-3 as Wood avenged his loss to Hudson in the last meeting during the regular season.
Kim put up a good fight at No. 2 singles against Skylar Butts, but fell 6-3, 7-5, while Bello was edged at No. 4 singles by Joe Dorn 7-5, 6-3.
Pomona-Pitzer will await its opening round NCAA Tournament opponent when selections are announced on Monday.
