Pasadena, Calif. - The No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team earned its way into the finals of the SCIAC Tournament with a 5-4 win over No. 13 Redlands in the semifinals on Friday afternoon at Pasadena City College.
The Sagehens also earned a 5-0 win in the quarterfinals over Whittier to improve to 25-5 overall on the season. Pomona-Pitzer will move on to face No. 1 CMS on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Pasadena City College in the SCIAC finals, which is hosted by Caltech.
Sophomore Antony Bello (pictured) won the clinching point at No. 4 singles 6-4, 7-5 after also earning a win in doubles with sophomore Spencer Simonides. Sophomore Graham Maassen also pulled off the singles/doubles sweep, earning a win at No. 2 doubles with junior Jonathan Kim, and then winning a quick one at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1.
Freshman Sam Malech also came through with a key win at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-2), giving the Sagehens a 4-3 lead after the Bulldogs had pulled even with singles wins at No. 2 and No. 6.
Redlands had won the last meeting between the teams on the final day of the regular season for the Sagehens 5-4, which came down to a third set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, won by Patrick Lipscomb. Lipscomb earned the final point again on Friday, but after the match was already clinched for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens will be facing CMS for the third time this season, after the Stags have handed Pomona-Pitzer two of its five losses. The first one was 8-1 at the Stag-Hen Invitational in March, and the second was a closer 6-3 decision in April.
