Claremont, Calif. - The No. 15 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team won a tight battle of nationally ranked teams on Sunday morning, defeating No. 11 Carnegie Mellon 5-4, and then shut out Hardin-Simmons 9-0 to pick up two wins at Pauley Tennis Complex.
With the sweep, the Sagehens improve to 7-2 on the season, including 7-1 against Division III teams. Carnegie Mellon falls to 5-5 and Hardin-Simmons slips to 1-6 with the losses.
Sophomore Jake Yasgoor (pictured) and junior Jonathan Kim earned a win at No. 2 doubles against Carnegie Mellon and then both win their singles matches as well, with Yasgoor earning a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Kim rallying back after dropping the first set for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3, which tied the match up at 4-4.
Kim's win left No. 5 singles as the decisive point, and freshman Marko Mandic was able to prevail to give the Sagehens the team win. Mandic won the first set 6-1, but then fell behind quickly in the second set to Tommy Cheng, who leveled the match with a 6-3 win. Mandic regrouped, though, and after dropping the first game of the third set, went on to a 6-2 by taking six of the last seven.
Sophomores Spencer Simonides and Graham Maassen had a dominant effort at No. 3 doubles as well, winning 8-2 as the Sagehens nearly came away with a doubles sweep. However. Carnegie Mellon's Will Duncan and Christian Heaney-Secord rallied back from a 7-4 deficit at No. 1 doubles, fighting off two match points at 7-6, and took the tiebreaker 7-4.
The nightcap against Hardin-Simmons saw the Sagehens play six different players in singles, and all picked up wins, with freshman Blake Myrin winning the tightest match in three sets at No. 6 (10-3 in the third set tiebreaker). Junior Thomas Low won a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 1, while senior Kevin Wei, junior Sam Crawford, freshman Kalyan Chadalavada and senior Connor Sutton cruised to wins at 2-5.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it hosts Bowdoin on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest.
