Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team continued its recent run of success by knocking off No. 3 and previously unbeaten Middlebury 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Pauley Tennis Complex.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer is now 15-3 on the year and has won five straight over ranked teams, including three straight 5-4 decisions and a 6-3 win over No. 1 Amherst. Middlebury slips to 7-1 on the year with the loss.
After picking up a 2-1 lead after doubles, the teams split the singles matches with Jake Yasgoor winning at No. 2, Graham Maassen at No. 4 and Sam Malech at No. 6 for the Sagehens. Malech and Maassen both won in three sets within minutes of each other, with Malech giving the Sagehens a 4-3 lead with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win over Allen Jackson. Maassen then defeated Jackson Frons 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 for the clincher.
The doubles lead proved to be big, as senior Connor Hudson and freshman Kalyan Chadalavada came from behind 5-3 for the swing point at No. 1, winning 8-6 by breaking serve in the final game of the match. Sophomores Spencer Simonides and Antony Bello dominated at No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 win to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead, but Middlebury picked up an 8-5 win at No. 2.
The first two singles decisions went Middlebury's way as Palmer Campbell won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and Ari Smolyar outlasted Hudson at No. 1 by a 6-3, 6-3 score. Yasgoor gave some momentum back to the Sagehens with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 to level the match at 3-3, and nearly an hour went by before any other decisions were determined, when Malech and Maassen provided the fourth and fifth points.
Middlebury's Courtney Mountifield added a win at No. 5 in a third-set tiebreaker to make the final score 5-4.
Pomona-Pitzer's grueling schedule continues tomorrow with another tough NESCAC opponent, as No. 12 Williams visits Pauley Tennis Complex for a 4 p.m. match.
