Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team won every decision except the very last one as it took two wins on its opening day, defeating Occidental 9-0 at home and Chapman 8-1 on the road.
With the wins, the Sagehens start the year 2-0, with both wins coming against conference opponents. Occidental and Chapman both start out the season 0-1 with the losses.
Pomona-Pitzer used 12 different singles players over the two matches as it utilized its depth for a pair of wins. In the Occidental match, sophomore Jake Yasgoor played at No. 1 singles and took a tough 6-2, 7-5 win over Josh Dancu. He also played No. 1 doubles with junior Jonathan Kim, earning a close 9-7 win, while Kim earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
Senior Michael Chang (pictured) earned an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles with senior Connor Sutton, and won his match at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1. Junior Thomas Low won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and took an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles with freshman Marko Mandic, who was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 5 singles. Sam Crawford completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Against Chapman, senior Connor Hudson played at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, earning a 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 win in singles and teaming with freshman Kalyan Chadalavada for an 8-2 win in doubles. Hudson and Chadalavada enter the spring ranked No. 2 nationally in doubles after reaching the ITA Small College national finals in the fall.
Sophomore Spencer Simonides earned a close win in singles at No. 3, winning 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. Senior Kevin Wei earned a win at No. 4, leading 6-2, 3-2 when his opponent retired. Freshman Sam Malech cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5, while Chadalavada won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
Crawford and Wei earned an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, while sophomores Josh Kim and Graham Maassen prevailed in a tiebreaker 9-8 at No. 3.
Pomona-Pitzer has 11 days off before returning to action with a home match against Bates on Feb. 18.
