Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Despite a strong 17-point, 7-rebound effort from junior Basha Brulee-Wills, Pomona-Pitzer's women's basketball team fell to Transylvania at home in Voelkel Gym Friday night in the 2015-16 season opener for both teams.
The visiting Pioneers (1-0) edged out to a 22-18 lead after the first quarter behind Katelyn Smith's 10 points, and held a 35-30 halftime lead. While Pomona-Pitzer (0-1) stayed close in the final two quarters, the Sagehens couldn't close the gap. TU's Smith finished with a game-high 20 points to lead the Pioneers.
Behind the strong game from Brulee-Wills (pictured), Pomona-Pitzer's Cassandra Palmer provided a spark off the bench by scoring 10 points, and Amelia Hummel grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Sagehens.
The two squads shot nearly equally from the field. Pomona-Pitzer scored 22-63 FGs (34.9%), while Transylvania hit 22-67 FGs (32.8%) on the night. However, the Pioneers made seven 3-pointers compared to two for the Sagehens, and the Pioneers made 19 free throws to 12 for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer travels to La Sierra Thursday for a 5:30 non-conference game before returning to Voelkel Gym to host Linfield on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
