Pomona-Pitzer Rallies, Falls Just Short At Unbeaten Chapman

Box Score

Orange, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team used an 11-0 run to take a late one-point lead, but unbeaten Chapman (13-0) was able to hang on late and come away with a 58-56 win on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss was the 10th in a row for the Sagehens (2-11, 0-4 SCIAC), all of which have come by single digits, including six that have come to the wire as a one-possession game in the final 20 seconds. Pomona-Pitzer continued to be without four of its six top veterans (Gibson Farone-Collins, Michael Cohen, Joe Eyen, Reid Callan) and two reserves (Spencer Schwartz, Earl Schultz) due to injury. Chapman improves to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in league play with the narrow win.

Senior guard Kyle McAndrews (pictured) had 23 points to lead Pomona-Pitzer, including back-to-back jumpers to cap off the 11-0 run and put his team in front 54-53 with just under five minutes left. Taylor Hamasaki answered for the Panthers, and Colin Zavrsnick added a transition basket to push the lead to three. McAndrews responded with a jumper and Zavrsnick made one of two at the line with 32 seconds left to make it a two-point game.

McAndrews was able to free himself for a tying shot attempt with 20 seconds left on a floater from 15 feet, but it came off the rim. The Sagehens caught a break as Chapman came down with the defensive rebound, but fell out of bounds with 19 seconds left to give Pomona-Pitzer one last chance.

McAndrews got the ball at the top of the key and made his move with just under 10 seconds left. He faked a drive and stopped on a dime, freeing himself for an open 18-footer. The ball hit the front rim, hit the backboard, and then slowly hung on the edge of the rim momentarily before falling off, where Chapman was able to rebound it and throw it down to the opposite end of the court to kill off the final few seconds.

Zavrsnick led Chapman with 20 points, while Hamasaki added 13. McAndrews led all scorers with 23 points, while senior guard Adrian Brandon added 14 for the Sagehens and sophomore forward Mitchell Finkel had a game-high eight rebounds.

Pomona-Pitzer will try to get back on the winning track with a road game at Whittier on Saturday at 7 p.m.
