Quilliam Leads Women's Soccer To 3-1 Win Over Redlands

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Senior midfielder Nicole Quilliam (pictured) had two goals and an assist to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team to a 3-1 win over Redlands on Saturday morning in a home SCIAC contest.

With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC. Redlands slips to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the loss.

The game began with a frenetic flurry of goals that gave the Sagehens a 2-1 lead just 9:32 into the contest. Pomona-Pitzer opened the scoring at the 6:52 mark as Quilliam assisted on a goal from freshman midfielder Abby Onderwyzer Gold, with the two players exchanging quick passes inside the box before Onderwyzer Gold maneuvered past a defender and tucked a six-yard shot into the net.

The lead last for only 90 seconds, though, as Redlands scored off a long ball out of the back. Faith Campbell played it long into open space, and Erin Lau ran on to it behind the Sagehen defense down the right sideline. She sent a cross into the middle, and Kate Frame was able to one touch the ball into the net at the 8:23 mark to tie the score 1-1.

Pomona-Pitzer came right back just 1:09 later as freshman midfielder Sofia Barsher took a long shot from 25 yards out on frame. Redlands goalie Lexi Felix laid out to make the initial save, but Quilliam crashed in from the weak side and tucked a shot into the net before Felix could recover to make the score 2-1.

Junior goalie Annie Wedel came up big to stop a Redlands breakaway late in the first half, tipping a shot from Lihini Weerasinghe off the post. The ball rolled through the goalmouth, but the Sagehens were the first to the rebound to clear it away. The Bulldogs nearly tied the game up in the final 10 seconds of the first half, but had a goal waved off for offsides.

Pomona-Pitzer then went ahead 3-1 with some quick passing inside the box, as Onderwyzer Gold centered to Bethune, who laid the ball off to her left to a crashing Quilliam. Quilliam had a clean look at net, and was able to beat Hannah Menk for her second goal of the game to make the score 3-1 at the 52:11 mark. The Sagehens then protected the lead the rest of the way, as Redlands wasn't able to put a serious threat on net.

Pomona-Pitzer ended the game with a 17-8 edge in shots (10-3 in the second half). Wedel had four saves to get the win, while the two Redlands goalies combined for six.

The Sagehens will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Occidental for a 4 p.m. contest.
