Top-Ranked CMS Pulls Away To Defeat Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team battled No. 1 CMS evenly in doubles, but the Stags were able to pull away for an 8-1 win on Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Sagehens (ranked No. 13 nationally) slip to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC.

Chris Wiechert and Anthony Bello (pictured) earned an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles for Pomona-Pitzer, holding on after building a 7-4 lead to earn the win on Bello's serve. CMS won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, and the Sagehens had a chance to earn the swing point at No. 2, serving with an 8-7 lead, but the Stags got the tying break and then won the tiebreaker 7-4 to take the 2-1 lead going into singles.

The Sagehens battled through several tight matches in singles, but the Stags were able to sweep without losing a set. The closest was at No. 2, where Jake Yasgoor went to a tiebreaker in the first set, but Joe Dorn was able to prevail.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend when it hosts two SCIAC matches on Saturday, facing Cal Lutheran at 10 a.m. and Occidental at 3 p.m.
