Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team swept singles to take an 8-1 win over perennial Division III power UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference match on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-5 on the season, while UC Santa Cruz falls to 5-8.

The Banana Slugs did not lose a match to a Division III program in the entire decade of the 1990s, and the Sagehens did not get a win in the modern era of the series until a narrow win in 2012. UC Santa Cruz won the rematch last year, but this time Pomona-Pitzer was able to control the match throughout to coast to the win.

Graham Maassen (pictured) and Connor Hudson won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles and then each won their singles matches as well. Maassen had one of the two most dramatic individual wins, as he came back from down 8-5 in the third-set tiebreaker with five straight points for a 10-8 victory. Hudson won a close 6-4 decision in the first set and then took control in the second for a 6-1 win at No. 3.

Sam Crawford and Jonathan Kim bounced back from their first doubles loss since opening day (vs. Williams on Tuesday) and took an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, with Kim cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles to provide the clinching point, giving the Sagehens a 5-1 lead.

Chris Wiechert earned the first singles point with a quick 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 1. Josh Kim won the last singles point with an 11-9 victory in a third-set tiebreaker, coming to net with the score 9-9 (after George Goetz fought off two match points to pull even) for a backhand volley, and then ending it with a service winner. Jake Yasgoor also won his singles match at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow for a SCIAC match at Caltech, beginning at 2 p.m.
