Sagehens Split Two At Stag-Hen

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Jake Yasgoor (pictured) won both his singles matches as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team went 1-1 on the first day of the Stag-Hen Invitational on Friday at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

The Sagehens (ranked No. 16 nationally) fell 5-3 in a close match against No. 13 Bowdoin in the morning (the final singles match did not finish due to the tournament format of two matches in one day), then came back in the afternoon to defeat Swarthmore 7-2. With the split, Pomona-Pitzer moves to 5-2 on the year.

Yasgoor rallied for a three-set win against Bowdoin, while fellow freshman Graham Maassen took a win a two-set win at No. 4 singles, winning the second-set tiebreaker 7-5. Sophomore Jonathan Kim was leading 7-6, 3-2 at No. 5, but his match was not completed after Bowdoin clinched the team win.

The Polar Bears got the clincher at No. 6 singles, where Michael Chang fought off three match points before Chase Savage won three straight points (the last coming on a mis-hit that fell over the net) for a 6-1, 6-4 win.

The turning point of the match was in doubles, where No. 1 went to a tiebreaker for the swing point. The Sagehens had four match points on Bowdoin's serve leading 7-6, but Sam King put away two of them with volleys at the net. Senior Chris Wiechert (who had five service return winners in the game) missed with a return down the line by about an inch on the fourth and final match point. Bowdoin ended up getting the 7-4 win in the tiebreaker and the 2-1 lead going into singles, or else Kim's match at No. 5 would have played out tied 4-4.

The Sagehens went to a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles again in the Swarthmore match, but this time Wiechert and Bello pulled it out to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-0 lead going into singles. Kim and sophomore Sam Crawford won both their doubles matches on the day at No. 3.

Kim and junior Connor Hudson picked up quick two-set wins at No. 4 and No. 3 singles to clinch the team win. Yasgoor added his second win of the day, and junior Kevin Wei added a two-set win at No. 5 singles to make the score 7-0. Swarthmore picked up wins at No. 1 in a third-set tiebreaker and at No. 6 (6-3, 6-3) to make the final score 7-2.

Pomona-Pitzer will face Carnegie Mellon tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in the final match of the Stag-Hen.
