Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team, ranked No. 16 in the nation, took a 2-1 lead after doubles but dropped a close 5-4 decision to No. 11 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday on the final day of the Stag-Hen Invitational.
With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 5-3 on the season while Carnegie Mellon improves to 11-4 with the win.
The doubles team of Jonathan Kim and Sam Crawford (pictured) won a tiebreaker 7-5 at No. 3 to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead heading into singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Chris Wiechert and Anthony Bello also won 8-2.
However, the Tartans won four of the six singles matches, with the two Sagehen freshmen coming up with the individual wins again. Jake Yasgoor won again at No. 2 to finish a perfect 3-0 at the Stag-Hen (with wins over Bowdoin and Swarthmore yesterday), finally earning a 10-4 win in the third set tiebreaker.
Graham Maassen also came back from down a set to win the second two sets 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, remaining a perfect 2-0 on the weekend as well (he did not play against Swarthmore).
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Monday for a home match against Whitman on Monday at 1 p.m., before facing Amherst on Tuesday and Tufts on Wednesday in 10 a.m. matches.
