Orange, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team swept doubles and was able to cruise from there to a 7-2 win over Chapman in its SCIAC opener on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the 17th-ranked Sagehens move to 2-0 on the season, after defeating No. 23 Bates 7-2 on Thursday in its first match of the year.
Senior Chris Wiechert and freshman Anthony Bello won 8-6 at one doubles, and Wiechert also earned a hard-fought three-set win at No. 1 singles (12-10 in the extended tiebreaker). Freshmen Graham Maassen (pictured) and Josh Kim earned an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, and Maassen took a 2-0 win at No. 2 singles with both sets going to tiebreakers, winning 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3).
Junior Michael Chang improved to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, while freshman Spencer Simonides was dominant at No. 6 in his first singles match of the spring, winning 6-1, 6-1. Sophomores Sam Crawford and Jonathan Kim accounted for the other Sagehen point with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
Pomona-Pitzer has two weeks off before returning to action on March 6 at home against Mary Washington, beginning at 4 p.m.
