Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Katie Tao (pictured) scored an early goal in the 15th minute and it held up the rest of the way as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Whittier 1-0 to remain alone in first place in the SCIAC on Saturday morning.
With the win the Sagehens move to 7-2-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the SCIAC, remaining the only unbeaten team in the league. Whittier slips to 1-9-1 overall and 0-6 in the SCIAC with the loss.
The only goal came when senior defender Rachel Keyser won the ball and was able to send a through ball into the right side of the box to Tao. After taking a dribble, Tao slotted a low shot that went across the net and inside the far post to make the score 1-0.
The Sagehens controlled play most of the way, but most of their shots were off target. Junior goalie Annie Wedel was tested late, but was able to make a diving save on a 15-yard shot from Sofia Garcia in the 88th minute and push it wide of the post to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer finished with a 20-4 edge in shots, but put only four shots on net, as well as a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Sagehens will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a battle of the top two teams in the SCIAC standings.
