Box Score Redlands, Calif. - Junior goalie Annie Wedel (pictured) made a diving save in the closing seconds of regulation and stopped a breakaway in the closing seconds of overtime as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team escaped Redlands with a 0-0 tie on Wednesday.
With the tie, the Sagehens move to 7-4-3 overall and 5-1-3 in the SCIAC, putting them in third place in the conference standings. Redlands moves to 6-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the SCIAC, good for fourth place.
Wedel finished with seven saves and twice prevented the Bulldogs from dramatic buzzer beaters. Her diving save at the far post on a header from Kate Frame prevented Frame from scoring with just four seconds left on the clock.
Then, after junior Nicola Ying Fry missed high from just inside the top of the box for the Sagehens at one end with 30 seconds left, the Bulldogs countered up the other end of the field and Tanya Haggen found a seam behind the defense, but Wedel came off her line to smother the shot with just seven seconds left in the second overtime to enable the game to end 0-0.
The first half was evenly played, with sophomore Katie Tao having the best chance for either team when she hit the crossbar in the 41st minute. However, Redlands controlled play in the second half, outshooting the Sagehens 15-2 and having a 5-0 edge in corner kicks, but Wedel saved all four shots on net, including the one in the closing seconds from Frame.
Redlands finished the game with a 21-9 edge in shots after overtime evened out again with each team taking two. The two Bulldogs goalies combined for only one save on the day.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Occidental at 11 a.m.
