Women's Soccer Drops Non-League Game To Santa Cruz

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Junior defender Taylor Fortson scored a late goal, but it was not enough as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer dropped a 2-1 non-league game to UC Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon.

The loss drops the Sagehens to 7-4-1 overall, while the Banana Slugs, which received two goals from Sara Sadler, level their record at 6-6-1 on the year with the win.

All three goals in the game came on corner kicks. UC Santa Cruz scored first with 12:23 left in the first half as Dru Dowis took a corner kick from the left side that was headed towards goal by Kacie Ring. Sadler was the first to it in front of the goalmouth and was able to knock it home from close range to make the score 1-0.

The score held until just 19:41 remaining when Sadler scored again off a corner, this time heading in the cross from Olivia Dobbs. The Sagehens got the goal back with 6:14 left as Fortson headed in a corner kick from senior Sara Ach. However, one last gasp effort from freshman Molly Mosher went wide in the final minute as the Banana Slugs held on.

Junior Annie Wedel had six saves in goal for the Sagehens, as UC Santa Cruz held a narrow 14-11 edge in shots.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow for a road match at La Verne at 7 p.m.
