Sagehens Stay Unbeaten In SCIAC With 2-1 Win Over Chapman

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Sofia Barsher and midfielder Julia Dohner scored goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team took a 2-1 win over Chapman on Wednesday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Stadium (Barsher goal pictured).

With the win, the Sagehens move to 6-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the SCIAC, remaining unbeaten in league play through the first five games. Chapman moves to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference with the loss.

The Sagehens struck early just 5:07 into the game, as freshman Abby Onderwyzer Gold stole a Chapman clear attempt in Pomona-Pitzer's offensive third and played a through ball to Barsher. After taking a dribble, Barsher was able to tuck her shot past onrushing Chapman goalie Kristin Kleinow and into the net for an early 1-0 lead.

The score stayed frozen at 1-0 for nearly 75 minutes, as the Sagehens twice hit the post in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Katie Tao beat Kleinow cleanly from 15 yards in the 18th minute, and sophomore defender Jamie Kerester hit the post in the 28th minute (with Tao missing just wide on the rebound).

At one point, Pomona-Pitzer had a 14-0 edge in shots before Chapman got off their first one late in the opening half on a Rosie Kerstetter strike from inside the box that was saved by junior goalie Annie Wedel. The second half was played much more evenly, with the Panthers holding a 6-5 edge in shots and threatening for a tying goal several times.

However, the Sagehens were able to get a key insurance goal with just 11:03 left in the contest. Kerester was able to get to the right corner flag and send a cross in front of the net. Dohner then timed her run perfectly, starting from outside the box, but crashing in unmarked and leaping in front of Kleinow to head the ball in from a yard out.

That goal would prove to be crucial as Chapman broke through with 3:37 to go. After a Sagehen foul just outside their box, Haley Fedden took a free kick that hit off the crossbar and bounced down in front of the net. Rebeccah Bortz was the first one to it in traffic, and slipped the rebound into the net from in close.

Bortz had one final chance when she got a clean look with 20 seconds to go from inside the right edge of the box, but the ball sailed high as the Sagehens were able to hold on for the 2-1 win. Kleinow finished with five saves for Chapman, while Wedel had three for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens return to action on Saturday for a home game against Whittier at 11 a.m. before a big showdown with fellow SCIAC unbeaten Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday evening at CMS.
