Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore forward Jenn Okonkwo had 19 points and 13 rebounds (10 offensive) to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team to a 66-60 win over Webster on Monday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
With the win, the Sagehens close out the 2013 calendar year with a 4-6 record on the season, while Webster falls to 5-4 with the loss. Freshmen Alaina Woo and Basha Brulee-Wills each had 13 points for Pomona-Pitzer, while Brittany Harris-Conway led Webster with 16 points.
Pomona-Pitzer led most of the way, but had to fight off numerous challenges from the Gorloks. A three-pointer from Ashley Brooks brought Webster within 46-45 with 8:13 left, before Woo and junior guard Ruthie Shapiro hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the Sagehen lead up to seven points.
Pomona-Pitzer was able to maintain the working margin down the stretch, as an Okonkwo three-point play made the score 57-49 with 5:03 left, and a Brulee-Wills lay-up made it 59-51 with 4:23 to play.
Webster had one final run as a Mia Williams three-pointer brought the Gorloks within 62-59 with 38 seconds left. Shapiro hit one foul shot to make it a two-possession game, and Woo added a pair with 18 seconds left to make it 65-60 and the Sagehens were able to get the final stop they needed to secure the win.
Pomona-Pitzer had 12 blocked shots on the day, led by four from Shapiro and three from Okonkwo. Shapiro also added 10 rebounds to go along with seven points.
The Sagehens will return to SCIAC play on Saturday when they host Redlands for a 7 p.m. contest.
