Redlands, Calif. - Juniors Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho - pictured) and Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) won at No. 1 doubles and then each took three-set wins in singles as Pomona-Pitzer defeated Redlands 6-3 in a tight SCIAC match on Sunday.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 12-9 and 4-2 in the SCIAC and will be the third seed in the SCIAC Tournament, which will be held at Redlands on May 4-5. Redlands falls to 15-7 overall and 3-3 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer took a 2-1 lead after doubles, losing only the tiebreaker at No. 2 as Redlands avoided the 3-0 sweep. Sabel and Allinson continued their strong doubles play with an 8-4 win at No. 1 after beginning the year as the Sagehens No. 2 doubles team.
The Bulldogs then pulled ahead 3-2 by winning in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 6 singles. Freshman Connor Hudson (Denver, Colo.) won a relatively quick match in three sets at No. 4 to level the match at 3-3.
The match then came down to the final three singles lines, with senior Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) joining Allinson and Sabel in bouncing back from first-set defeats to force the deciding third set. Allison put his in the books first at No. 5 to give the Sagehens a 4-3 lead, and Meyer was able to pick up the clincher at No. 1. Sabel finished off the 6-3 win with a three-setter at No. 3.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend when it competes in the Ojai Tournament in its final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships.
