Sagehens Dominate Singles To Take 6-3 Win Over Mary Washington

Claremont, Calif. - After falling behind 2-1 in doubles, Pomona-Pitzer dominated the singles portion of the match to take a 6-3 win over Mary Washington on Thursday evening at Pauley Courts.

With the win, the Sagehens, ranked No. 12 nationally by the ITA, improve to 3-4 on the season, while 19th-ranked Mary Washington falls to 4-5.

Pomona-Pitzer took No. 1 doubles relatively easily, as seniors Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) and Uday Singh (Beverly Hills, Calif.) won 8-4, but Mary Washington took the other two doubles contests 8-6 and 8-3. Junior Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) and Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) trailed 6-1 at No. 2 before rolling off four straight wins to get back within 6-5, but fell just short of its comeback effort as Alex Blakhin and Sam Wichlin each held serve to finish off the set for the Eagles.

The comeback, though, gave Pomona-Pitzer a little bit of momentum heading into the singles competition, and the Sagehens came out on fire. Allinson at No. 5 and freshman Connor Hudson (Denver, Colo.) at No. 6 won their first sets 6-0. Meyer at No. 1 and sophomore Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) at No. 2 won theirs at 6-1, and Singh (pictured) won his at 6-2.

Meyer closed out his match at No. 1 quickly over Wichlin by taking the second set at 6-1 to level the overall match 2-2. Wiechert fell behind 2-1 early in the second, but then rattled off the next five games for a 6-1, 6-2 win over Evan Charles, and a 3-2 Sagehen lead. Hudson was down a break at 5-4, and then won the last three games at No. 6 to stretch the lead to 4-2, and Allinson closed out his match at No. 5 with a 6-3 win to seal the victory for Pomona-Pitzer.

Singh closed out his match at No. 4 with a 6-3 win in the second set. Sabel tried to rally at No. 3 to make it a complete sweep as he forced Blahkin into a tiebreaker, but Blahkin won the last two points for an 8-6 win the tiebreaker and a 6-2, 7-6 win in the match for the lone singles point for Mary Washington.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of home matches, taking on Swarthomre at 1:30 p.m. and Haverford at 5:30 p.m. The Sagehen Women's Tennis team will also be playing UC Santa Cruz simultaneously for a full day of tennis at Pauley Courts.
