Claremont, Calif. - Juniors Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas - left) and Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho - right) had their second straight dominant doubles win and also won their singles matches to lead the No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team to a 7-2 win over No. 20 Whittier on Friday afternoon at Pauley Courts.
Sophomore Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) extended his personal winning streak to 13 straight singles matches at No. 2 for the Sagehens as well with a 6-3, 6-4 win, while also winning at No. 3 doubles with Alex Groth (Delvan, Wisc.) 8-5. Twelve of the 13 straight wins for Wiechert have come against nationally ranked teams.
The Sagehens improve to 8-8 overall with the win, including 2-1 in the SCIAC, while Whittier slips to 9-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Allinson and Sabel earned an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, one day after winning 8-1 against seventh-ranked Middlebury. The energy saved from an easy doubles win came in handy, as they both needed to go three sets to win their singles matches. Sabel bounced back from a 6-4 loss in the first set, to win the second and third sets 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 3 singles over Chris Schommer.
Meanwhile, at No. 5 singles, Allinson won 6-1 in both the first and third sets, but in between fell 6-2 to Andy Hansen.
Wiechert had the most dramatic match, even though it only went two sets, as he and Patricio Carregha were on the court long after the three-set matches had concluded, due to extended rallies and frequent deuces. The second set was knotted up 4-4, when Wiechert picked up a key break and then served out the match by winning the final three points after falling behind 15-30.
Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) picked up a key win at No. 1 singles to help the Sagehens clinch the team match. He outlasted Julian Seneviratne in a first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) and then won the second set 6-3 to give the Sagehens a 5-2 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when it steps out of conference for a key match against regional rival UC Santa Cruz at 10 a.m. The Banana Slugs knocked the Sagehens out of last year's NCAA Division III Tournament.
