Claremont, Calif. – Sophomore Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) extended his singles winning streak to 10 straight with two wins as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team split a pair of matches Friday on the first day of the Stag-Hen Invitational on Friday at Pauley Courts.
Pomona-Pitzer fell 5-4 to sixth-ranked Kenyon in its first match of the day, and bounced back to defeat No. 22 Skidmore 6-3 in its second match. The Sagehens, ranked No. 13 nationally, move to 7-6 on the year and will face either No. 4 Johns Hopkins or No. 11 Washington University tomorrow at 10 a.m. (weather permitting).
Wiechert, who plays at No. 2 singles, avenged his last loss in the Kenyon match as he defeated Michael Razumovsky in a third-set tiebreaker 7-4 after splitting 6-3 decisions in the first two sets. He then dropped the first set to Skidmore's Luke Granger in his second match, but rallied for a 7-5 win in the second set and closed out with a 6-1 win in the third.
Wiechert has not lost a singles match since Razumovsky defeated him in the first round of the ITA Indoor Nationals at Gustavus Adolphus on Feb. 24. He opened his spring with a defeat at Azusa Pacific (one of the top five teams in NAIA) on Feb. 4, and the Razumovsky loss dropped him to 0-2, but he has come back strong with 10 wins in a row against top competition.
The margin of victory in the Kenyon match was provided in doubles, where all three were nail-biters. Josh Stiles and Austin Griffin took a 9-8 decision at No. 1 doubles over Sagehen seniors Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) and Uday Singh (Beverly Hills, Calif.) with an 11-9 win in the tiebreaker.
Connor Hudson (Denver, Colo.) and Singh joined Wiechert in taking singles win for the Sagehens, but Paul Burgin, C.J. Williams and Tim Rosensteel won at 1, 3 and 4 for Kenyon to make the 2-1 advantage in doubles stand up.
The Sagehens came out of doubles with a 2-1 lead against Skidmore, as Meyer and Singh dominated the tiebreaker 7-3 after playing to an 8-8 standstill through regulation play against Oliver Loutsenko and Alec Hoblitzell.
Pomona-Pitzer then took the top four singles spots, with Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) clinching the team win at No. 4 with a three-set comeback win over Hoblitzell 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Meyer and No. 3 Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) each took straight set wins for the Sagehens.
