Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Connor Sutton (Overland Park, Kan. - pictured) had an 8-1 doubles win against Swarthmore and a 6-0, 6-0 singles win against Haverford as the 12th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team took two wins on Friday at Pauley Courts.
The Sagehens defeated Swarthmore 7-2 and Haverford 6-3, as they improved to 5-4 on the young season with the victories, including four straight since a 1-4 start.
Pomona-Pitzer got off to a good start in both matches by sweeping the double competitions to take a 3-0 lead in both. In the Swarthmore match, the closest battle was at No. 1, where seniors Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) and Uday Singh (Beverly Hills, Calif.) held off Zak Kelm and Max Bressman 8-6.
Meyer also had a tough battle in singles, as he dropped the first set to Kelm 6-3, but bounced back to win the second set 6-3 and then earned the shortened tiebreaker in the third set 10-6.
At No. 2 doubles, junior Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) and junior Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) earned an 8-3 win, and Sabel followed with a strong performance in singles, winning 6-4, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) and Sutton had an easy time with an 8-1 win, and Wiechert won his singles match 6-4, 6-1. Connor Hudson (Denver, Colo.) also added a singles win in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-2.
In the second match, the Sagehens were able to rest much of their line-up due to a busy 10-day Spring Break schedule. Sabel and Allinson were able to win their second doubles match of the day at No. 1, but two new doubles teams saw action and pulled out 8-6 wins, with senior Alex Groth (Delavan, Wis.) and freshman Michael Chang (Milpitas, Calif.) winning at No. 2 and Hudson and freshman Kevin Wei (San Diego, Calif.) earning a close win at No. 3.
Pomona-Pitzer didn't use any of its usual top six in singles, but Chang, Wei and Sutton all came through with wins in the 3-5 spots to help secure the victory. Sutton had the most dominant performance in his first official singles match as a Sagehen, not surrendering a single game, while Chang and Wei both earned tight 7-5 wins in one of their sets (Chang in the second set, Wei in the first).
The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow at Pauley Courts to take on No. 11 ranked Trinity (Texas).
