Pomona-Pitzer Edged By Trinity In Top 15 Battle

Claremont, Calif. – Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore. - pictured) won his matches at both singles and doubles, but Trinity (Texas) was able to hold off a late challenge from Pomona-Pitzer for a 5-4 win on Saturday evening at Pauley Courts.

The loss drops the No. 12 Sagehens to 5-5 on the year, including two losses to No. 11 Trinity, which also won the fifth-place match against Pomona-Pitzer at the ITA Indoor Nationals in February.

Wiechert and teammate Connor Sutton (Overland Park, Kansas) were the only doubles winners for the Sagehens, as they pulled out a 9-7 win at No. 3. Wiechert was then a straight-set winner at No. 2 singles, earning a 6-2, 7-5 win over Erick DelaFuente.

That win brought Pomona-Pitzer within 4-2, with three close matches remaining to be finished, but the first one to end was at No. 4, where Jordan Mayer fought off two match points and came back from a 5-2 deficit to defeat Uday Singh (Beverly Hills, Calif.) 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, which sealed the team victory for the Tigers.

With the match already in hand, Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) still had to finish off a dramatic bout at No. 1 singles with Max Frey, an NCAA Division III Semifinalist a year ago. Meyer led 4-1 in the third, before Frey rattled off four straight wins to put Meyer against the wall. He grouped, though, to hold serve twice (the second time at love) and then pulled out a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to get a big win.

The match concluded with Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) outlasting Ben Carroll in three sets after dropping the opener 6-3. Allinson was down a break in the third, but came back to break Carroll twice and take the 6-4 win in the third set.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action at home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Carnegie Mellon.
